Discussion about the Main Page Article
Newcomers - What did you expect to see but didn't see here on the main page?
What would help people use the wiki more?

JJ: 20061113-2131UTC I've expanded the To begin... section, and my intention is that once we have that section the way we want it, we can spin off the details into a separate page for each subsection, so all of the detail is not inflating the Main Page.
Z: 20061114-08.00UTC I agree - and I think this works at a cognitive level too. I wonder if studies have been done on page length. I know I get a 'feelimg' after so many words...
JJ: Personally I think this is how the wiki may work organically - a page topic stimulates production of more content - which means the page keeps getting longer, so at every reasonable opportunity we may want to spin off chunks to pages that address that particular subtopic. For example:
Foo Topic 1: here's a buncha text in the main page that is a detailed explanation of Foo Topic 1 (i.e. a madeup topic and name) (imagine 30 more lines or so of text here)
Foo Topic 2: more detail but this is for people who may or may not need to read Foo Topic 1 (imagine 30 more lines or so of text here)
Gets changed to
On the Main Page: If you need to know about click here 1
For more info about click here 1
Then create a page named Foo Topic 1 that has the details for that topic, and do likewise for Foo Topics 2 to n...
The new OrgasmWiki is better than most others I have seen . . . In fact, it's just Great!
Excuse me for saying so, but:
I can't understand why our people from the old site don't take advantage of this great community facility. This should breathe new life into KSMO protocol!
Does anyone have any constructive ideas on "How to grow KSMO in general and - on this beautiful new site in particular?"
I was waiting for someone else to mention this, since I am a relative "newbie" here, but there...I've said it any way!!!...
Sorry folks, but I am very excited about my being able to do some amazing things, that I would have thought totally beyond the realm of normal people like us, just a little over a year ago!
Please jump in here KSMO COMMUNITY! (I have seen other sites just die-out from lack of participation from its Members, just like any-other group) I feel this Forum is worth alot to me and worth doing whatever I have to do, to keep it growing and alive!
If you are put-off by the high-tech aspects of the new site, one of us will surely help you set-up a small profile and maybe later, if you feel like it,...a BLOG?
Also: What would make you want to log-on to OrgasmWiki every day? (Photos, Interesting Links to other sites, Audio files, feature articles, related current events? What would it take to get you excited? - Please let us know!)
I'll get down off my soap box now... SORRY
Hlaser
Hlaser As for the constructive ideas on "how to grow KSMO in general" I am wondering just what you mean by grow-do you mean individually or as a group in general? As for on this site - not many are 'computer capable or literate' and IMHO some may even balk at switching to a 'new and better' KMSO website and having to learn the (what I have come to learn) simple steps it takes to start- both in obtaining a log on name and starting their own WIKI page.
And I whole-heartedly agree with you helping others get started. Jack, Zeitgeist, you and I , anyone of us are willing to help.
NEVER EVER be sorry for speaking your mind..it is one of the (many) things that I love about KSMO. I , most of the time, find myself upon a soap box-but not to preach, but because I CARE enough to speak what is in my heart. *smiles and tears up with love in her heart
Laly
Hello Laly!
You are indeed, a treasure to ALL who encounter you, on life's journey! Glad I ran into you on THIS trail!
I meant as a group, to ensure the survival and continuation of this most valuable KSMO protocol. I started the above thread, out of concern for our growth and survival! I feel like we are a sort of world-wide village here and like a real village, we must have new members to thrive. I believe that the new OrgasmWiki is crutial to this!
You are probably right about the extent of computer experience by the average person? (My bad!) I guess the average computer-literate person is limited to the software programs they have used. Then there is the amount of on-line experience...
Of course, if we are not growing as individuals, we will not grow the KSMO at all! (IMHO, we would ALL just be "normal" people again.) Yuck!!!
I would make a very poor preacher, too! It's just that, when I see something I care about that's not working properly, I usually try to help make it run a little better, if I can.
I am sure we both want the same things for this-here town, Maam? (Everything is good!)
I agree 100%! If this was a Forum that kept us from speaking our mind, I doubt it would exist for long? "Power to the People" LOL!
Good to hear from you, Laly!
Later, Hlaser
Cool!!
Tha
That is what I thought you meant. *smiles (just wanted to clarify in case someone else came to same thoughts I did).
If IMHO most people are like me and the help issue (that is - it is hard thing to ask for/admit in needing); altho I am getting better about it. :-)
As for the wanting to hep, yeah I am same way , that is, I want not only myself to improve and grow- but I want that for others too. *smiles and tears up It just goes to my lovel of care and love- SO much to give and share.
mmmmm...yeah POWER to the people *grins widely
Your welcome, anytime HUGSS,
Laly
Main Page Layout and Content
UPDATE JJ: 20061105-0230UTC:
I grabbed a copy of the MediaWiki home page code. Gonna see if we can adapt it.
Going to create a test page here: Main_Page_MWlayout
(JJ's comments are in italics): I think the Main Page should continue to evolve, There's a lot about the The MediaWiki Home Page at least generally - that I really like. We can change the content or just use parts of it.
Z: Here we are JJ; posed in a sort of playful, curious way that one can imagine! :-) As a newbie or as an existing forum member, what would I expect to see on the first page of OrgasmWiki As if it were up and running online? ...and what order might that be in? :-) Z
JJ: Yep, that is the question. We need to get answers from as many people as we can.
Z: 20061101 -12:38 UTC. How about an OrgasmWiki Update bulletin within the usual mass mailing you normally send out. It needn't be very long
I suspect you won't get many answers back from a question about what people want, so Maybe a poll of potential content:
- Headlines
- How to
- Latest posts (like you do now with the forum)
- News
- Most popular pages looked at
- Where to go for...
- How to guides
- Favorite Links
JJ: 20061106-2218UTC - I also think we'll get good answers from the search logs, on the main site and in the wiki. My first goal is a page with the exact name of the search term that got entered. So next time they'll go to a specific page when they type in that word or phrase. I've already made a start with small contributions to What does it feel like and such.
What about using the Main Page layout of MediaWiki or of Wikipedia as a Model?
JJ: 20061029-2230UTC - That is, to use a block layout like they are using with different areas for different levels of user - as well as browsing help for the general public? Personally I'm leaning a little towards the MediaWiki one rather than Wikipedia but I'd like to know what others think as well.
Z: 20061031-2015UTC - I feel there could be some customer 'orientation' for someone new in in the first page. It could be a 'Front Page' by itself - very concise with just a single paragraph or a single paragraph within the main page, maybe the first paragraph under the table of contents.
JJ: 20061106-2218UTC - How about the page I've started editing at: Main_Page_MWlayout
Z 20061111-2000UTC I've replied in an email but basically I'm torn between the simplicity of the mediaWiki and the somewhat complex html and the 'busy' layout yet simple html of wiki. WHAT DO OTHERS THINK?
Hlaser: 20061116 - I think the MediaWiki looks very good! (Organized well, attractive, functional, I guess?, easy on your eyes!) IMHO.
