Question How about tabs at top instead of second horizontal navbar? Poll attached

What do you think about using tabs just above the current first horizontal navbar, carrying the links that are currently appearing in the second horizontal navbar?

Like the ones shown here

That is, except for the Expand Chatbox link, which already appears in the text just above the chat box as view Chat full-page

Please post comments and vote in the poll.

Could you offer an explanation as to what this will accomplish? Right now I see no reason to change anything, but I might change my opinion.

I have no investment in forcing the change.

Just asking if people would prefer it.

If you are looking to move the second navbar around, I have a suggestion for the log out link. You could put it in the same 'box' as the log in.

Click here to log out, Valentine

If you do that, the 'search' link should be on the far right, where the log out link used to be.

I also think 'new posts' should be edited somehow. When I click it, it shows 143 matches. I don't have a suggestion on how to edit it though. There should be some happy medium between the 'new posts' link, and the box that shows the most current blog post/comment and forum post.

I know that I and a few others look to that box to see what is new for the day at the KSMO forums. But since it only shows the most current, we miss the good info that was posted seconds before. I have missed a few blog posts because of this. It is a great feature, but it needs improvement.

p.s. I totally voted wrong!!! -1 leave as is, and +1 I have a diff...

Thumbs up Re: OTHER ideas - Logoff button adjacent to login, expanding New Posts boxes functionality, limiting somehow New Posts list

Thanks Val! As always... good suggestions... re: the Logout I presume you mean a button, is that correct?

One thing though... when you branch from the original thread topic, how about creating a new thread with proper keywording?

You introduce several ideas here which could be new threads.

The logoff (button?) idea is an easy one but the New Posts issues each merit a thread of their own!

You create it with your statements and my answers and we'll take it from there, what say?

Sorry about the forced choice nature of the poll... I have a different suggestion shouldn't be part of the forced choice!

RE: Happy medium... please define the medium range that would, well, make you happy...

RE: New posts... I actually have my own gripe about how that is handled and that is that vB automatically marks a post as read the first time you look at it and if you want to go back to it, that's been a real bear to find it.

Hopefully the advent of Google site search will alleviate that somewhat provided you remember enough of a keyphrase for Google to serve up the hit.

I guess re: limiting the new posts list, other than that you'd have to decide how you want it limited... by date? Wouldn't that be a bit arbitrary? Might you miss some of particular interest to you? By category? But then how are the categories defined consistently among all users?

That's why I tend to lean on Google site search now that we have it deployed and ad-free, frankly... but by all means keep those gray cells firing and come up with a great Blink that will make the Happy Hack.

RE: The most recent post box and missing posts from just a few seconds before... I hear you! It was my idea, ahem (thanks, no applause necessary) to include that box in the first place and vbmtor coded it up. So we have some good flexibility there...

We just need your specific few extra steps beyond the "needs improvement" zone. I doubt that you'd want the box to be any bigger, but maybe a scroll bar, perhaps patterned after the way the ChatBox (also vbmtor's creation - loud applause for him most welcome!) text is scrollable. What do you think? What do the rest of you reading this thread think?

Do you want to increase the Latest Post(s) boxes to show a little more, like first little bit from latest 2 or 3 posts, with a vertical scroll for the rest?

Let's here it folks and I'll pile it on vbmtor's shoulders. He's young, he can take it!

Valentine may not have been aware of that-- in just writing out ideas Jack.. Just IMHO here.

I agree ...Valentine--that way we can reply to them with some ideas/support of our own sweetie .

not sure what Val meant by this...maybe he can clarify it a little better.

Thank you for that Jack...yeah a scoll bar would be cool ...a bigger chat box area ...what is in place is good enough for me . seeing everyone in chat no matter where i am in the forum is kewl.

Yes, a button would be great for logging out!

All that other stuff, I just got on a roll, and, like I said, I was carb depleted. The things people do when carb depleted.

I'll make some additions to the suggestion box thread from this thread, once I think of a solution to my own gripes.

LOL sounds great, Val!

Meanwhile, go ahead and gripe even when you don't have a solution for it, at the moment. Maybe somebody else will have one or even more than one!

Whichever is decided, can I suggest that "Expand Chatbox" is unneccesary placed anywhere at the top of the page since it's already present in the Chatbox itself. This would reduce clutter.

Default Re: Putting a descriptive text label on the Expand ChatBox to Full-Page button.

Actually the button is already there, it's just not labeled, and vbmtor forgot to remove the link from the navbar.

Good thing, too because the button has a picture of an arrow rather than a descriptive label, so I too, missed it... If we have, then others have as well.

I've asked him to replace the curved arrow with a descriptive label that says Expand ChatBox to Full-Page.

Hopefully he'll get a chance to do that this weekend, as well as remove the superfluous Expand link that still remains on the navbar.

Thanks for helping us tidy up, Mog!
