Question Glossary - Wiki or Forum?

Until I found the multi-functioned vBulletin, I thought OrgasmWiki might replace the use of the obsolete Akiva Forum we used to use.

Since the deployment of vBulletin Forum, the OrgasmWiki has languished... and that certainly makes sense, because wikis aren't designed to replace Forums.

But upon finding and deploying vBulletin, it did become clear quite quickly though that OrgasmWiki - using the software upon which Wikipedia is based - was not useful as a discussion forum.

However, I'd like to know from our community if perhaps OrgasmWiki might be a better way to organize a useful Glossary.

The challenge is that it's another learning curve as far as how to edit, post, and discuss the entries, but it's not that steep a curve, it seems to me.

I also need to say that I just don't have enough hours in the day (and night!) to adequately administer both a wiki and this Forum, in addition to my other responsibilities to this community. By the way, this work is my day job, and my night job!

That said, the OrgasmWiki can be a great way to pull together a lot of the wonderful information that often lays hidden in the 3000+ posts of this Forum that have been accumulating since 1997!

There could be a very useful Forum / Wiki synergy!

On the other hand, maybe it's a lot easier just to continue to edit a single post in the Forum that has all of the terms in it. One-stop shopping!

What do you think? I'm also attaching a poll to this post so you may cast your vote as well as post a comment in reply.

PS: Posting rights to the Wiki require a separate registration, and for philosophical reasons, apparently, the developers of the wiki software don't make that easy unless we just throw the doors open to the general public, which, due to the nature of the subject matter, I'm reluctant to do because I don't want to have to police it for spamming, etc.

To be able to post to the wiki, just let me know and I can register you, and I'd certainly be happy to give these kinds of administration rights (i.e. the ability to register other members) to any number of the members of our Forum community. I just want the wiki membership to be restricted to those who have rights to register to our Forum community.

I would prefer to keep it in the forum. This is my most frequent stop and seems the logical place for a newbie to come to on his/her quest for info. Sticky posts typically are chock full of things aimed at getting someone up to speed without lots of forum searching.

For reference information such as a Glossary, the wiki would be better to use as it can be kept up to date as a living document regardless of how often it is updated. If kept in the forum, users may have to wade through several posts as updates are made to it. And, when edits are made, it will show up in the New Posts result list which is probably something you don't want since users won't know what edits were made.

You may want to consider limiting editing to mods or volunteers. This would hopefully limit your administration duties. Suggestions for input into the wiki can be done through the forum. The Aneros community has recently done something like this and it may work here as well.

Yep, I agree totally. That was definitely the intention for the wiki, although b4 I found vB I was thinking about trying to use it to replace the Forum but of course, that's not a wiki's purpose.

I was VERY glad to find vB, and then vbmtor to help admin it.

100% agree!

Yes as I am already quite maxed with admin duties and help in here, etc.

Who is willing to volunteer to admin/moderate the OrgasmWiki? Your help would be of great benefit to our community!

Yes that certainly makes the most sense, and I thank you for the suggestions!

It's quite likely to, especially since a large number of our members here are already familiar- and comfortable with the Aneros site. Why go thru a second learning curve?

Many, many thanks, OTP!

Hi Laly, thanks very much for volunteering to help out.

Please check your email.

I also hope that artform might consider volunteering to accept moderator rights since he got the ball rolling in this regard, and of course Onthepath as well.

How 'bout it, guys?

The more I read the response from people the more I'm I can see pros to both sides. 'One stop shopping' is nice but having one single concise document is nice too. Hmmmm, I think I'd stick with the forum and just update one single thread.

I hear ya Canuck.

I think if people want both and are willing to volunteer the effort to maintain both modes of access, why not!

Certainly anybody wanting the wiki format and willing to volunteer to help maintain the content there can pluck the plums from the forum thread(s).

The wiki has a pretty good search engine, and the forum has Google site search, so like the practice itself, there are many paths to the top of the Mountain.

Thanks everyone for your input!

I'll be on the road the next few days but am looking forward to the chat at 1700GMT Saturday.

Please note there will only be the one this Saturday, and none at 0200 GMT Sunday due to further commitments, but then will be back on the schedule two weeks thereafter, per the Calendar
