Can private messaging be enabled on the forum?
This would be helpful to users that have problems sending or receiving email from Jack. Some people may also prefer to communicate directly with others if the topic is a little too personal, off topic from a current post, or they think it will be of little interest to the forum users. It could also be used as a follow up to an answered post in the forum. In some cases, with the permission of both parties, these communications can be published in the forum if they both believe that it will be of benefit to the forum community. Private messaging can be enabled or disabled, so if a user prefers not to receive private messages, then they can turn that option off. Perhaps it needs to be turned off by default. I think you can also set it up to receive messages only from moderators and your buddy list and no one else. Onthepath |

OnthePath...I am not sure Jack would enable PM in the Forums...is his decision
But I do want you (and others) to know there is an option that I want you to be ware of and that is taht you can send a message to any forum member via email. I have had a few members ask me questions that way and it seems to work fairly well... just my 2 cents on this...

Hi Laly and thanks,
If using the email option, does the sender see your email address or do they just send an email via your forum username? If the former, some people may not want to publish their email address. Also, it won't work if either person is having email problems with spam blockers, etc. Private messaging is just another alternative. Onthepath |

Jack and I discussed this very topic awhile back and he is hesitant to have 'open' IM as he created this as a 'private' place for forum members to post and feel 'secure and safe' doing so. The email would be sent using your email account in your forum profile you set up.

Hi Laly,
Thinking some more about this, if you use the email option, you have no way of knowing whether the sender has a virus that can infect your machine or harvest your email address for spam purposes. Using private messaging keeps everything in the forum. I may be missing something here, but if not, it may actually be safer for users to use private messaging than to allow other users to send them emails. It's not really like IM, but more like a mail system where inbound messages go into your inbox while sent messages go into your sent folder. I think Jack can control the number of messages that each user can keep so as not to take up too much space on the server. Hope this helps, Onthepath |
